Substance Abuse During Pregnancy
Addiction to alcohol and drugs is a progressive, chronic disease characterized by cravings, compulsive behavior, harmful side effects and relapse. As with other diseases, addiction poses serious risks, including death for pregnant women and their babies. Co-occurring mental health disorders, which commonly accompany addiction, also present unique health care challenges. Eating disorders, depression and other co-occurring disorders can endanger the mother and cause physical changes that negatively affect the development and wellbeing of her unborn child.
Everything that a woman consumes while pregnant can affect her unborn baby. Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs pass through the placenta — the organ that provides nutrition and oxygen to the baby — and cause serious problems including the baby being born addicted to the same substances as the mother. Therefore, women who are pregnant or who are planning to become pregnant should avoid any recreational drug or alcohol and talk to their health care provider about a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Help is available for pregnant women who struggle with substance abuse. However, almost every addicted mother has numerous questions. Is help available and truly safe? What will it entail? Is it possible to be completely free from the grip of addicting substances without harming the baby? How does one learn to live sober?
