Pregnant Program

The Family Place is one of the few treatment facilities in the country featuring a gender-specific treatment program designed specifically for pregnant women. You may feel hopeless and overwhelmed right now, but you are not alone. This is a full-term and short post-partum premier pregnant program. The program is specifically tailored for mothers struggling with addiction and mental health disorders. The staff at The Family Place are here to help you and your baby get safely through detox, withdrawal, and early recovery

Substance Misuse and Pregnancy

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “Estimates suggest that about 5 percent of pregnant women use one or more addictive substances.” Substance misuse can profoundly affect mothers and their babies during pregnancy. Many factors will determine the severity of symptoms and possible side effects, including:

  • Personal and family history of substance misuse or mental health disorders
  • Co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Age
  • Treatment choices

During the detox phase you will either be slowly tapered off the addictive substances or put on a low dose of MAT to ensure the safety of you and your baby. The medical experts at The Family Place will provide you with a list of options to choose from and guide you through every step of the process. We will never expect you to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or uncertain about your baby’s health. Learn more about how we can help you and your baby by visiting our Treatment Services page.

Treatment for Pregnant Mothers

We tailor every treatment program to your specific needs and the professional advice of your OB-GYN. Depending on your situation and the substance involved, you may need to taper off slowly using medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to ensure the health and safety of you and the baby. You will undergo regular medical check-ups to monitor your progress, and we will make adjustments to your treatment as needed to ensure you stay healthy and comfortable.

Collaboration is essential to ensure your baby gets the best care during and after pregnancy. Clinicians at The Family Place will provide you with access to medical services, such as:

  • Gynecological care
  • Family planning
  • Prenatal care
  • Pediatric care
  • HIV/AIDS services
  • Educational classes

Your case manager will advocate for you and the baby throughout your treatment and monitor your recovery progress and goals. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), “Women who stop substance use while pregnant are at high risk of relapse to substances of abuse in the postpartum period.” To decrease risks associated with postpartum depression or other mood disorders related to pregnancy, we encourage mothers to remain in treatment until they feel stable and confident in their sobriety.

What to Expect During Pregnancy and Post-Natal Care

The focus of treatment during prenatal and post-natal care will be your health and the health of your baby. We practice a holistic approach, which includes offering services and program features that ensure your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. You will have access to the highest levels of care every step of the way, and your case manager will make sure you have all the skills and resources you need for yourself and the baby during treatment and continuing care.

At The Family Place, we understand that pregnancy comes with unexpected and unique situations. Our team will keep you on track through the pregnancy and post-natal treatment. You and your baby will have the complete support of our family-like community.

Motherhood Classes and Education

The Family Place does more for expecting mothers than other programs that accommodate pregnant women. We have gender-specific therapy and education to give you and your baby the best outcome possible. Some of the essential education we offer include:

  • “Mommy and Me” classes
  • Breastfeeding classes
  • Co-parenting classes
  • Moms in Recovery

You will learn life and parenting skills that prepare you for motherhood. Part of the treatment services we offer to ensure your continued health and wellness include:

  • Nutritional counseling
  • Educational services about nutrition, reproductive health, and parenthood
  • Information on sexual health and safety
  • Prenatal education regarding the effects of substance misuse on children during development
  • Essential skills development

The more you know about what to expect from motherhood and coping with stressors related to childcare and parenting, the lower your risk of relapse. You want to stay healthy and in recovery for the sake of yourself and your baby. We are here to help make that possible.

Aftercare Services and Case Management

Your case manager will coordinate your treatment and aftercare services. We ensure you have access to details and contact information for local community-based and private resources, including those specifically for new mothers. Through relevant support services, your case manager can help you secure:

  • Car seats and cribs
  • Baby clothes and accessories
  • Childcare assistance
  • Pediatric care
  • Housing and financial assistance
  • Transportation to and from appointments and support meetings

Your case manager will do everything possible to ensure you have everything you need to give your baby the best life possible
